Are Americans as Divided as We’re Told?

The media likes a fight.

The United States Senate is as dysfunctional as a Spirit Airlines flight.

It seems like a good idea until you find out there are a bunch of unwritten rules, hidden fees, and a crew that will do anything to make you miserable.

The majority of 100 is 60?

You only need 51 votes to hire someone to a lifetime job on the court but 60 votes to pass a bill the majority of Americans want?

What do you mean I have to pay to use the bathroom on this flight?

In the Senate, it is divided evenly between Republicans and Democrats (counting the 2 Independents who often join the Democrats).

However, it should be noted that Senate Democrats currently represent nearly 40 million more voters than Republicans.

So why is it split evenly?

By 2040, it’s possible that 70 percent of Americans are represented by just 30 senators, while 30 percent would be represented by 70.

Obviously, the Senate is broken and terrible, but that just helps prove the point that America is not politically divided as we are told by the media every single day.

We know the media likes conflict because who wants to watch a boring news story on how Americans are getting along? It’d be a great change of pace, but it isn’t riveting television.

But it should be noted how Americans are actually united in some ways.

For instance, recent polls show that nearly 70 percent of Americans are in favor of raising taxes on the richest Americans.

And a poll from this past June showed that nearly 72 percent of Americans agreed that humans are causing climate change.

And the controversial topic of abortion?

Nearly 60 percent of Americans are opposed to any law that would outlaw abortion after 6 to 8 weeks. And 74 percent said they oppose a law that would allow private citizens to sue abortion
